Arthur Jussen

Lucas and Arthur Jussen are among the most in-demand piano duos of our time. Given their brilliant international career, we can say that the Jussen brothers are among one of the Netherlands' best-known ambassadors when it comes to classical music.

Previous engagements took them to orchestras such as the Boston Symphony Orchestra, The Philadelphia Orchestra, Concertgebouw Orchestra, Budapest Festival Orchestra, NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra and Academy of St Martin in the Fields. They have worked with many renowned conductors, including Christoph Eschenbach, Iván Fischer, Sir Neville Marriner, Andris Nelsons, Yannick Nezét-Séguin, Jukka-Pekka Saraste and Jaap van Zweden. They perform the concerto "Anka kuşu" (Phoenix), written for them by Fazıl Say, with the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, with the Oslo Philharmonic and on tour with Amsterdam Sinfonietta. Touring projects with the London Philharmonic and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra followed. They are "Artists in Residence" with the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano. In recitals, they can be heard in Hamburg, Berlin, Bratislava, Prague, Antwerp, Brussels, Chicago, Abu Dhabi, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Lucas and Arthur Jussen have had a contract with the Deutsche Grammophon label since 2010. Their debut recording of works by Beethoven went platinum and was awarded the Edison Klassiek Publieksprijs. After a Schubert album and "Jeux", a recording of French piano music, the two Mozart concertos Kv242 and Kv365, accompanied by the Academy of St Martin in the Fields conducted by Sir Neville Marriner, were released in 2015. The album achieved gold status. It was followed by Poulenc's Double Concerto and Saint-Saëns' Carnival of Animals, recorded with the Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by Stéphane Denève. A recording of concertos and chorales by Johann Sebastian Bach, made in collaboration with the Amsterdam Sinfonietta, was released in 2019. On "The Russian Album" (2021), they interpret works for two pianos by Rachmaninoff, Stravinsky and Arensky. In their latest recording "Dutch Masters" (April 2022), accompanied by the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Karina Canellakis, among others, they devote themselves to works by Dutch composers. The recording was awarded an Edison Klassiek in the "Chamber Music" category and the Audience Award in September 2022.

The Jussen brothers received their first piano lessons from Leny Bettman in their hometown Hilversum. As children, they performed for Queen Beatrix and their first prizes at competitions followed. In 2005, the two met Portuguese pianist Maria João Pires. In the following years, they were taught by both Pires and renowned Dutch teachers. Lucas completed his studies with Menahem Pressler in the US and with Dmitri Bashkirov in Madrid. Arthur completed his studies with Jan Wijn at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam.
