Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 is the last of his Wunderhorn symphonies, drawing on his song cycle in which he set poems from Des Knaben Wunderhorn, a German folk poetry collection to music. One of these songs, Das himmlische Leben, forms the core of his fourth symphony: the melody re-emerges as a motif throughout the symphony, culminating in a superb soprano solo in the work’s grand finale. Prepare to be overwhelmed by the stunning voice of soprano Christiane Karg and this highlight of Mahler’s fascinating career during this Sunday morning concert!
