With Elim Chan in the Concertgebouw
One hundred years ago, Michel Fokine shot to international fame with his ground-breaking choreographies for Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé (1912), Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances (1909), and Stravinsky’s The Firebird (1910). Today he is considered the ‘father of modern ballet’. At the start of the new season, the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra pays tribute to the connection between the two sister disciplines of music and dance in Amsterdam’s iconic Concertgebouw. Like his compatriot Ravel, the French composer Saint-Saëns always sought to imbues his music with new colouristic nuances. On this occasion, the Dutch star violinist Simone Lamsma will perform his exquisitely sensitive Violin Concerto No. 3, which is widely considered one of the most beautiful classical violin pieces.
