Chamber Music: Schubert's Octet
Franz Schubert began work on his superb Octet in F major with Beethoven’s popular Septet at the back of his mind. This proved an inspiring period for Schubert because he completed this work at the same time as two other gems, the Rosamunde and Der Tod und das Mädchen string quartets. This work, in which Schubert uses the ensemble like a small orchestra, paved the way for his Symphony No. 9. At the same time, Schubert produced a superb octet, combining the intimacy of chamber music with monumental symphonic sound.
