Stefan Geiger

Stefan Geiger received his first music lessons at the age of five and learned the piano, violin, percussion, and trombone. As a recipient of the German Academic Scholarship Foundation, he garnered awards in various international competitions, including the Concours International du Festival de Musique de Toulon in 1989 and at the Prague Spring International Music Festival in 1992.

His professional journey began at a young age as an orchestral musician, initially as the Principal Trombonist at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, and shortly afterwards in the same position with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra in Hamburg.

In 1996, after completing his conducting studies and assisting renowned conductors such as Christoph Eschenbach, Valery Gergiev, and Christoph von Dohnanyi, he assumed the artistic leadership of the Bremen State Youth Orchestra. In the years 2002-2007, he was entrusted with the direction of the orchestra of the Bremen University of the Arts as part of a guest professorship.

Stefan Geiger has conducted guest performances with numerous orchestras, including the Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra, the Ensemble Resonanz, the Würzburg Philharmonic Orchestra, the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra, the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, the Württemberg Philharmonic Orchestra Reutlingen, the Wuppertal Symphony Orchestra, the Norddeutsche Philharmonie Rostock, the Dortmunder Philharmoniker, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the Royal Northern Sinfonia, the Romanian Radio Orchestra, the Transylvania State Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orquestra Sinfônica de Porto Alegre, the Orquestra Sinfônica Municipal de Campinas, the Orquestra Sinfônica da Bahia, the Orquestra Sinfônica de Sao Paulo at the Sala Sao Paulo, and the Buenos Aires Philharmonic Orchestra at the Teatro Colon in Argentina.

For many years, Stefan Geiger has been a guest conductor with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra Hamburg. His performances include leading concerts with orchestral accompaniment to silent films. Acclaimed films such as “The Artist” (featuring Oscar winner and film music composer Ludovic Bource as piano soloist) or “Ben Hur,” comedies by Buster Keaton, and dramas such as “Battleship Potemkin” have thrilled audiences.

Stefan Geiger is co-founder and jury chairman of the “German Games Music Award,” a competition in collaboration with Radio Bremen that provides a platform for young composers creating sophisticated music for video games. The initiative has not only garnered significant online attention, with the internet stream of the inaugural event in 2012 becoming one of the most-watched contributions of its kind on “Arte-Liveweb,” but continues to thrive successfully to this day.

In 2016, Stefan Geiger became the General Music Director at the Teatro Guaíra in Curitiba, Brazil. As chief conductor of the Orquestra Sinfônica do Paraná, he conducted successful opera and ballet productions in addition to symphonic concerts and led the orchestra to South America’s most renowned festival, the “Festival Internacional de Inverno de Campos do Jordao,” in 2019.

With the 22/23 season, the Filarmonica Banatul in Timisoara, Romania, appointed him as Principal Guest Conductor.
