Buster Keatons 'Sherlock Jr.'
Camille Saint-Saëns is mainly famous for his magnificent symphonic works, such as The Carnival of the Animals. What many people don’t realise, however, is that he was also one of the earliest composers of film scores. The evening opens with the short historical film The Assassination of the Duke of Guise (1908), with a live performance of the soundtrack by the Antwerp Symphony’s string and woodwind sections. The magic continues with Sherlock Jr. (1924), actor/director Buster Keaton’s marvellously inventive silent movie. This masterpiece will be brought to life in the most spectacular manner in the Queen Elisabeth Hall. The story is simple: a poor, young movie projectionist longs to be a detective. When he is framed for a crime, he sets out to prove his innocence. Enjoy this entertaining short film in Keaton’s signature style, with live music by the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra’s brass section.
