It took Brahms almost fifteen years to compose his German Requiem. The success of his large-scale work for chorus, orchestra, and two soloists reshaped his career, earning him a reputation as a symphonic composer. Brahms took a less than traditional approach to the requiem, offering comfort to the living rather than prayers for the souls of the dead, creating a deeply human requiem as a result. Elim Chan guides Collegium Vocale Gent and the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra through this mighty romantic and deeply lyrical masterpiece for an unforgettable evening of pathos, serenity and solace.
