Der Tod und das Mädchen
Schubert created a monument of chamber music with his Der Tod und das Mädchen. As the end of his life drew near, the Austrian romantic composer drew on his eponymous lied, in which he describes death both as a curse and a blessing, to compose this poignant string quartet. The quartet conveys this same message without words, drawing an impressive musical arc from gloom to redemption
and consolation. Joseph Ryelandt’s String Quartet No. 2 provides an epilogue to German Romanticism, with pathos and lyricism alternating in what is probably one of the most beautiful Flemish string quartets to have ever been written.
